Interior Drain Tile
Interior drain tile (typically a perforated pipe) runs along the inside perimeter of the basement floor near the footing. It intercepts water that enters through the wall-floor joint and channels it toward the sump pit. This is the core of most interior drainage systems.
Drainage Channels
In some installations, a drainage channel is used instead of or alongside drain tile. These sit along the base of the foundation walls and collect water seeping through the wall surface. The water flows by gravity into the sump basin.
Sump Basin and Sump Pump
The sump pit is where all collected water is directed. The sump pump then moves that water out through the discharge line. The basin needs to be sized appropriately for the volume of water the system will handle. An undersized pit leads to pump overload during heavy rains.
Discharge Line
The discharge line carries water from the sump pump to the exterior, well away from the foundation. It needs to terminate in a location where water cannot drain back toward the house. A check valve on the discharge pipe prevents backflow into the pit.
Drainage Stone
Washed gravel is packed around the drain tile to allow water to move freely into the perforated pipe. Without it, silt and soil compress around the pipe over time and reduce flow capacity.
Vapor Barriers
In crawl spaces and some basements, a vapor barrier is installed on the floor and lower walls. It prevents ground moisture from rising into the space and complements the drainage system by controlling what the drain tile does not capture.

A drainage system that was functioning well can degrade over time. Watching for these signs helps you catch the problems early.
Water pooling on the basement floor. Standing water after rain is the clearest sign the drainage system is overwhelmed or blocked. If this is new behavior, the drain tile may be clogged or the sump pump may be failing.
Efflorescence on foundation walls. Efflorescence is the white, chalky residue left behind when water moves through concrete and evaporates. It shows up on foundation walls that are seeing consistent moisture migration. It is a sign that water is getting in despite the drainage system.
Damp or wet walls. If the lower section of the basement walls feels damp or shows dark staining regularly, the perimeter drain tile may not be capturing water at the footing level as it should.
